I meant to write something about this, but Smart City beat me to it

And they did a lovely job of it, too.  SCC eviscerates Probate Court Clerk Chris Thomas for his idiotic reaction to Commissioner Henri Brooks' Kwanzaa celebration on county property.  His failure to understand that this is a CULTURAL, not religious celebration makes him look racist and reactionary.

Read the whole thing, it's too good to excerpt!

I read something of this in the Appeal over the weekend. According to that report, the Kwanzaa (best guess on spelling) folks used words such as "faith" to describe their event. If that's the case, ergo, it was a "religious" celebration and not permissible on public grounds without representing every, single other faith in the county along with it. Since that would take up--well--a lot of space, it seems better to just have nothing on the grounds rather than trying to be all-inclusive to the point of ad absurdum.
I might, of course, be wrong in my memory of the article's point and, naturally, I am not advocating the existence of some sort of O'Reilly-esque "War on Christmas." If, however, one group is able to proclaim their celebration as a matter of faith and do so on public, tax payer ground, then it's pure and simple a violation of the First Amendment we're usually so busy trying to protect against the "evils" of Christian intrusion or dominance.
It also is not racist or reactionary to ask for equal treatment: it's the law and, more than that, Constitutional. The last time I looked, the Constitution applies to all American citizens, not just those who can raise the biggest ruckus or garner the most votes in a given locale.

The same thing could be said about Christmas. There are millions in this country that are not religious in the least. They celebrate Christmas as "cultural" too! Dear LWC, you better leave your foot in your mouth. I have always heard that it is better for people to think that you are a fool, than to OPEN your mouth and prove their point!
