and fails miserably.

Yes, that's what it is. Paraphrasing an old song: They can't even run their own lives, I'll be damned if they'll run mine.

Another thing you always hear is that both sides (pro- and anti-choice, or if you prefer, pro- and anti-abortion) should surely be able to agree on making abortion "safe, legal, and rare," and that birth control that is both safe and effective would be an ideal place to start.

I'd love it if that were true--no woman really WANTS to have an abortion. But there is absolutely no 100-per-cent safe and effective method of contraception, and many in the camp of "them" (anti-choice)don't want women to use their choice of birth control or the RU486, either.

They always cast it as irresponsible women using abortion as contraception. Not a word about the risk of stroke from the pill, or the failure of the pill with certain antibiotics, or the thousands of women whose IUDs failed them or made them sick, or the condoms and diaphragms that didn't quite get the prevention job done, or the women who believed their doctors that they couldn't get pregnant because of medical reasons, or......

Anon, that's a big part of it. Our friend Captain Kona pointed out that Plan B is being prevented from full implementation, as is RU486, which would make abortion MOOT.

This is about controlling women and penalizing them for sex.

I tend to be pro-choice, but I think as well that as our society has made these rights available (not simply abortion, but contraceptiion: the case Griswold v. Connecticut in, I believe,
1962, established the pathway for Roe) has created an enviornment through which women and men can rid themselves of complications of their actions. There are, at the end, no solutions to these concerns no matter how much we try to shape and reshape language so that uor side might "win." Instead, there are only trade-offs. I believe that pro-choice is the best of two rather bad options, but I do not think it comes without cost. Left wing folks, I think, need to be more aware of those costs before issuing blanket defenses of their position.
