"The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. ” — Franklin D. Roosevelt

I am not laughing at the idea of Mae Beavers running for Governor

And, neither should YOU.  The Nashville Scene broke a story today that indicates State Senator Mae Beavers (R-Mt. Juliet, Senate 17) is considering a run for Governor of Tennessee next year.

Now, while you and I may think she is crazier than a betsy bug, and with documented reason, remember that this is a state where this HELPS you in a GOP campaign, and is a feature, not a bug.

Considering that Randy Boyd, former director Commerce and Development for Bill Haslam (and who has all but stated he plans to be Haslam 2.0) has announced, and Speaker Beth Harwell is seriously considering the race, the announcement that State Senator Mark Green (R-Clarksville) is up for Trump Secretary of the Army, means that the hardcore right needs their slot filled.  Mae Beavers is the Trumpiest of all the Trumpites, and could very easily win a primary despite having less money than either Boyd or Harwell.

Congresswoman Diane Black was rumored to be making the GOP race, but with the GOP expected to hold the US House for another election or two, she may be less inclined to do anything but run for re-election.    So, go again and check out that link to Google above about the State Senator, and tell me again how you would like her to run.

Do you REALLY think she wouldn't beat a rich white guy from Knoxville (Boyd) in the primary, and potentially a rich white guy from Nashville (Karl Dean) in the general?  Truth be told, that is one of the reasons I am hoping House Democratic Leader Craig Fitzhugh (D-Ripley) runs for Governor, because he could undercut her in rural areas while carrying urban areas.

If Mae Beavers does run for Governor, be afraid.  Be Very Afraid.

A word from Dave Cambron, and some words FOR Democratic County Commissioners

First, my words: I want to know why the hell any Democratic Commissioners would not be on board with this.  These three have some explaining to do.  Now, here's Dave:

Shelby Countians,

We have a unique opportunity to send a new progressive voice to the State Capitol from Shelby County.

Our County Commission will be voting on who will fill the vacancy left by Rep. Lovell after he resigned in disgrace amidst allegations of sexual harassment.

Adrienne Pakis-Gillon has indicated she would like to serve in this role. Adrienne, as many of you know, is a leading progressive activist, a club member and a staunch Democrat who will not hesitate to stand up for the values that we share. She was a key figure in getting the women's suffrage monument built, she is active with Planned Parenthood and current serves on the State Executive Committee of our Tennessee Democratic Party.

It is critical that Adrienne is chosen to fill the vacancy for State House District 95.

Four of the Democratic Commissioners have committed to support Adrienne Pakis-Gillion. But three Democratic Commissioners: Melvin Burgess, Eddie Jones and Justin Ford have not. This is simply not acceptable. Our Democrats must be unified and stand up against the radical right wing agenda coming out of the State Capitol.

If you want to see more progressive voices at the state capitol, then please take a few minutes today and call and/or send an email to these county commissioners and ask them to commit to voting for Adrienne Pakis-Gillion to fill the vacancy for House District 95.  Let them know that this vote matters to you and that you cannot support any Democrat who let's this opportunity slip away.

Progressives need Adrienne Pakis-Gillon in the State Capitol.  Make sure Commissioners Burgess, Ford and Jones vote to make it happen.  Please make sure to mention you want Adrienne named.
