"The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. ”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt
Yes, he did the right thing. I know (like, I've read it) what this bill is, and it will (eventually, via the "catfood commission II" supercongress) leave a lot of elderly pepole without medical care and cut Social Security (aka- begin the repeal of the New Deal).
Every member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus that voted "yes" on this "sugar coated Satan sandwich" abomination needs to be fired and replaced by someone to the left of them.
I am really, really glad that at the last minute Cohen decided to just vote with his conscience.
There's also a whole subtext to this debate that's being missed: the Congressional Progressive Caucus website seemed fine with cutting social security and medicare until about 5 minutes (literally) before the one hour debate was embarked upon and the vote taken. (I was sitting there refreshing the CPC website while listening to cspan at the time. I personally watched this happen)
And the day before, incredibly angry leftists who live in CPC districts were talking about challenging members of the CPC from the left if they voted for this POS bill.

That's a leader of the Black Caucus there calling for massive protests at the White House over this BS.
Again, I am so glad Cohen decided NOT to cut medicare and social security at the last minute there.
