Josh Marshall at TPM put out this letter from an anonymous DC Democratic staffer, and you have to read it.
The money quote:
This is my life and I simply can't answer the fundamental question: "what do Democrats stand for?" Voters don't know, and we can't make the case, so they're reacting exactly as you'd expect (just as they did in 1994, 2000, and 2004). We either find the voice to answer that question and exercise the strongest majority and voter mandate we've had since Watergate, or we suffer a bloodbath in November. History shows we're likely to choose the latter.

Actually, I think you do know what you espouse. I also believe you are both afraid to express it and, at the same time, confident enough--I'm being polite here--to do so. That schizophrenia, as you correctly surmise, is noticeable to the majority of American voters within the timeframe that most of them pay attention to politics. Such a combination of fear and--politely again--self-assurance often leads to highly problematic results when, from the standpoint of what the American voting public indicates as their desires (government run programs for a variety of things, including health care), easily should have won elections (2000, 2004 and last night) go the other direction.
