When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for [being a Democrat], and says he really doesn’t believe in [their platform], he is sure to lose. The people don’t want a phony Democrat. If it’s a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat. _ Harry S. Truman, May 17, 1952
Mayor Herenton announced that he has decided NOT to resign/retire on July 10 as originally noted, but will resign/retire on July 30. He even sent a letter to Council Chair Myron Lowery, saying so. Except that he later sent an interesting letter of rescission, which you may read here, courtesy of the CA. Do YOU see any date of resignation/retirement there? No, and neither do I.
Therefore, citizens of Memphis, I dedicate the above video to the Mayor, who has decided to become Effie White.
I might remind you, they still got rid of her in the end. may we be so lucky.
I'm composing a playlist of the mayoral back and forth--some possible songs:
"How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away"--Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks
"Never Can Say Goodbye"--the Jackson Five
"Go Away Little Boy"--Marlena Shaw, and yes, I realize the last word in the title is unspeakably vile in this context, but I want the Marlena Shaw version for her, "don't let the doorknob hit you where the dog shoulda bit you.." line. Also, I think Herman Morris would approve, as payback is a, uh, stern mistress.
I saw this coming when Memphians start dancing and singing in the street before July 10.
Maybe if the citizens of Memphis who wanted Mayor Herenton out had laid low and not showed their hand before the July 10 he would have left. Herenton decision had nothing to do with the countless names that wanted to enter the special election. I think his decision to take back his resignation had more to with Lowery becoming Mayor Pro-temp, Lowery’s Transition Team and the many people in City Hall with close ties to Herenton were next in line at the unemployment office once Lowery became Mayor Pro-temp.
I have to give it to Memphis; politics is never boring in your city.
Steve its like I said last year when he claimed he was going to resign. He's just screwing with you guys. He knows a lot of you don't want him in the Mayor's office. So he's just doing this to irritate you guys.
Hope the City Council votes for Memphis and votes to accept the original resignation letter. He needs to go, it is looking more each day like the man may need medical attention.
I saw a small piece in the CA about grants to Memphis under the stimulus bill for various worthy causes. It would have been a more prominent news item had not the WH circus been in town. I think in a perverted way WH may have intended to grab this news cycle away from this announcement, which of course reflects favorably on the incumbent Congressman, his opponent.
Or maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, the law of unintended consequences: Cohen can now say, how can you vote for him and not even know whether you'll get two years of service from him, he's so indecisive.
When your crazy aunt acts this way, they can appoint a conservator or power of attorney.

I give you, CrazyLand.
The more I learn about this clown the more I sympathize with my friends in Memphis.
WIKI says: "Proposed raising property taxes by 17% while taxes on his personal home were delinquent".
Typical dirty pol.
