On the passing of Jerry Falwell

While I will offer my sympathies to his family, as he obviously treated them better than the American public, I can only remember the public persona of Falwell, which can only be described in one word:

Evil.

Harsh, you say? Hardly. This man did more to pervert Protestant Christianity than anyone in my lifetime (Pat Robertson? No, who took him seriously? Adrian Rogers? No, he only worked within the SBC, which was trending that direction anyway) and he should be denounced, even in death.

This was a man who was pro-apartheid until he saw that it was not politically possible to do so, attacked the gay and lesbian community at will, and suggested that gays, liberals, etc, were responsible for 9/11, which is essentially what Al-Qaeda said.

I'm not going to be nice and say he was a fine fellow; in fact, this nation would be better off if he had not lived at all.

Flame away.

You might have added that there remains some discrepancy--OK, controversy--about when he got religion and decided to allow black church members. Falwell did, as you said, more to harm American Protestantism than almost anyone in our lifetimes (you were more blunt, even though I'm not holding much back here). His effects are very much in evidence throughout all segments of American society.

Flame away? Us, or Jerry?

Jerry's nuts roasting on an open fire, demons nipping off his nose...

With apologies to Mel Torme and Nat King Cole....

Wouldn't expect to see any sympathy for Jerry Falwell on a gay lib site.

Whether you agree with Jerry or not, you have to respect his depth of character, and his willingness to say what he meant without beating around bushes.

From the intensity of hauteur cackling from the left pits of the intertubes, it sounds like he made the right enemies. Good for him. I would be known as his friend.

None of you people celebrating his death has enough character to even polish his shoes. Stick to polishing each other's knobs.

And remember, the spread of AIDS isn't caused by TV evangalism...

First you question my sexuality, then you insult my aesthetic sense, if you're bright enough to know that means.

if Jerry Falwell was your friend, that says far more about you than I ever could, and it isn't good.

AIDS may not be spread by TV evangelism, but you're proof that ignorance and idiocy are. Stay in the woods, serr8d, don't come to Memphis where real people live.
