Barnes-Kurita, Round 2

Well, to the shock of few sentient beings, Rosalind Kurita filed as a write-in candidate for Senate District 22 to run against Tim Barnes in the November election. She can do that, today was the deadline, and presumably she will have every Gooper in that area writing her name in.

This, of course, is in response to the TDP ExecCom voiding her 19-vote landslide victory over Barnes in the August primary.

You know that I thought this was a bad move, but if this is going to be on, then I'm in Tim Barnes' corner, because she's gotta pay for her sins, folks. I don't like what the TDP did, but if you're going to do this, then it's time to step it up and put your money where your votes are.

This is where the lesson has to be learned. If you live outside the city of Memphis and you're a Democrat, this is one of the biggest races in the state. I know her name won't be on the ballot, but you're going to tell me that the Goopers are going to abandon her when they know Tim Barnes will vote for someone other than Ron Ramsey for Senate Speaker? Hell no, not after the guy they got to challenge Mike Williams (I-NASCAR-Maynardville), Mike Faulk, apparently got caught fooling around with a married woman who happened to be the former head of the Hawkins County Young Republicans.

Their hold on the State Senate is tenuous, and we need to ensure that the Democrats take back the Senate, or we will face near-destruction in two years, as Ilissa Gold smartly notes. We need to draw the line here and now, or we will be crushed in two years.

We can start by helping Tim Barnes.

Can't agree more. We don't need anymore Liebermans so let's nip this behavior in the bud. We must have control of the Senate so Barnes must be elected. For anyone who doesn't know, campaigns run on money so keep those contributions flowing to Barnes.

I am not a Democrat, but this seems to be getting out of control. The best thing for the GOP to do is to stay out of it.

With all due RESPECT to the Godfather, and all my liberal Brother and Sisters....Lieberman LOST his primary, and ran as an independent, Ros, won her Primary, and it was stolen from her.

If the party's actions to void the election were wrong ...then why should "we" validate those actions? The voters of District 22 made their choice, and if the rest of "us" wanted to support Barnes we should have done so BEFORE the election, like you did.

Yes "we" do need to take the Senate, but perhaps if the Party had simply reached out to Kurita, and worked out an arrangement for her to support a Dem senate leader they could have avoided all this. Would that not have been the better way to handle this? Deals get cut all the time, and afterall her issue was with Wilder...he is gone now.

Kurita WAS a democrat, until the party forced her out, by stealing her seat afterall. To say nothing of how badly she had been treated back in the 06 senate primary. To quote Jimmy McNulty, "You play in the dirt, you get dirty."

Barnes while a good Democrat and a good candidate is NOT the victim here, Kurita was. Frankly I can hardly blame her for her write in candidacy...What would you do?...If you won an election and had it taken from you? Did anyone really expect her to just walk away? Would you?

Now I am not saying that she was right in the Wilder affair, she was completely WRONG, but the fact remains, that IF she wins...that bridge is totally burned....but who really burned the bridge?

If the Dems lose the Senate over this, the TDP has only itself to blame...and perhaps...perhaps it should. A lesson needs to taught here, and it's not to Kurita..it is to the ham handed and arrogant party leadership that allowed this situation to escalate to such a pass.
If we as Progressive continue to Complain and then Comply with policies that we think are bogus, then WHY would the Leadership EVER do anything differently? All of this has happened before and will happen again.

Brad, she was given that chance in a Senate caucus meeting earlier this year after complaining that the Senate Democrats weren't helping her.

She was asked, point blank, if she would commit to voting for a Democrat for Speaker. Her response was something to the effect of "I can't believe you would ask me that question", so it was decided she couldn't be trusted NOT to vote for Ramsey again.

At that point, the gloves were off, considering they all knew Wilder was leaving. By the way, I have had my Senator confirm this story, which was reported earlier by Jackson Baker.

This, by the way, is NOT to disagree with you that the TDP is acting in a ham-handed manner. This whole thing stinks, but there is too much at stake not to fight in the general against her.

For whatever you want to say about Jim Kyle, I'd take him every day and twice on Sunday over Ron Ramsey as Speaker. Anything remotely progressive that has come out of the House has died a fiery death in Ramsey's Senate, and that would not have happened had Ros not put him in there.

Steve Steffens said...

Of course, in the end, it;s now on Kyle to put the resources together and gather the troops to ensure a Barnes victory.

If he can't, there go his hopes of ever becoming anything more than a state Senator. It's on him now.

Brad, the distinctions you raise are noted and appreciated, but we are where we are. To my knowledge, none of us posting here put Kurita, Barnes or the TDP in this situation. I agree that Kurita was wrongfully screwed in 06 - then she screwed the TN Democrats right back. Having read more today than yesterday, it appears that the election up there in District 22 was not as clean as it might have first seemed, but regardless of whether the TDP decision to override it was right or wrong, here we are. What cannot be afforded at this point is Ramsey in charge of the Senate again so Kurita must be beaten (already knowing her views) and Barnes must be supported.
