It's time to raise and allocate resources

It appears, by all accounts, that Obama has thrown up his hands and determined that Tennessee is unwinnable, and who could blame him? Most polls show him 20-25 points down, and this may be why a lot of Democrats outside Shelby & Davidson counties backed Clinton, fearing this result.

Combine that with a probable re-election for Lamar Alexander, and they figured that they have better places to put their cash. Yes, of course I support Bob Tuke; however, I presume you've noticed that the DSCC is treating him like plutonium, right? They're not sending money here, so I'm not looking for miracles. OK then.

In Shelby County, we still need to crank it up large for the Democratic ticket for several reasons. First, to reduce McBush's margin of victory, second, to elect Paul Shaffer to the City Council and drive a final stake in the heart of the Shelby County Republican Party. This, my friends, is the most important race on the ballot after the Obama/Biden race, and we need to help Paul as much as humanly possible.

He has been at the forefront of the labor movement in Memphis for years, and he has Democratic values, which, as we know, are the superior ones. He understands that Conrad would be a wholly-owned subsidiary of the developers who have sprawled Shelby County into a mess. Nice guy, but he's THEIR guy, and you know what I mean.

Conrad also represents the very last chance of the Shelby County Republican Party to win outside a district race, and they are fighting for Conrad as if this was the Alamo, which it may well be. Remember, though, how that turned out for those who fought Santa Anna!

So, if you live in SuperDistrict 9, while you're talking to your friends about Obama (and you ARE, aren't you?) Remember to talk to them about Paul Shaffer; he understands the true needs of SD-9, and he will fight for YOU, not the developer who's trying to screw up your neighborhood!

Great Cracker,

"...and he has Democratic values, which, as we know, are the superior ones"

By what standard do you define "superior?" Could it be that the vast majority of Democrats and Republicans generally want the best for our society but favor different ways of reaching them? It seems that the alternative not only makes consensus harder but it empowers the extremists on both sides.

Regards,

Mark

Mark:

Problem is, the Republican idea of what's "best for our society" is Fascism.
The persecution of those who do not wish to conform, turning away from the poor and destitute, committing treason, putting Israel's best interests before America's, making war for profit and supporting the cause with lies and fabricated evidence leading to the unnecessary and inexcusable loss of life we see in the miserable failure that is Iraq.

So ultimately, what Democrats want is what's best for the people and what Republicans want is what's best for Republicans.

Nice try, but a Centrist stance is no better than a Right Wing one.

re: the Obama people deciding that TN is unwinnable:

Well, practically speaking that may be right, but what happened to campaigning in all states, even the ones McCain was expected to win, to make them spend money.

I have contributed small amounts when I could to the Obama campaign, and I can't even get a bleeping yard sign. At first it was because they were "waiting for the VP name to be announced" then it was because "things are slow out of Chicago." When I tried to respond to one of the 47 email messages I get daily from the Obama groups, I got an automated message about submitting something on the official form in order to get a response.

BTW, the Memphis for Obama group seems to be about sending obnoxious material to the already-converted; aren't you sorry you asked us to sign up?

All of the above makes no difference in the fact that I support the candidate and will vote for and do what I can to get him elected. But I hope someone is listening to the fact that Obama shouldn't take anyone in any state for granted. A relative in a formerly red state says he believes it'll go Obama--it could happen here too.

Nice post, LWC. Although we politicos know that TN has been written off nationally, as usual, as a red state (perhaps rightfully so), the general public does not. So let's keep those voter education and GOTV machines rolling in Memphis for the biggest Obama turnout ever. We never know what could happen on the national scene and who knows, TN might just become competitive. If Ford JR came close statewide, anyone can - and this is a presidential turnout year so expect more Dems. CHIN UP.

I am a member of the Memphis For Obama effort. My team mates and I have given up a lot of our evenings and weekends to register voters, call other volunteers, and generally do whatever I can to make sure that as many people as possible in Shelby County are going to vote for Barack. To be sure, there are other volunteers who have give MUCH, MUCH more of themselves than I have to this effort. Clearly, the Obama campaign and the DNC don't feel that Tennessee is worth a great deal of investment, and this is very, very frustrating. Everybody would like us to have an unlimited number of yard signs and bumper stickers to give away, commodities which lately are more precious than gold. Those of us who are volunteering our time and energy on Barack's behalf are routinely berated, ridiculed, lectured, scolded, and laughed at for our efforts--and that is by our fellow Democrats!

So why bother? Lots of reasons: I sincerely believe that Tennessee could go back to the Democrat column, but SHELBY COUNTY MUST LEAD THAT EFFORT. Remember that Harold Ford Jr. lost his Senate race by 50,000 votes; so long as our friends in middle and east Tennessee keep organizing and fighting the good fight, if WE can bring voter turnout in Memphis above its historically abysmal levels, we have the sheer numbers to flip the entire state. It CAN be done, but it won't be done by nay-sayers or those who would rather scream themselves hoarse because they can't get a sign for their yard than pick up a clipboard full of blank voter registration forms.

Looking beyond the upcoming Presidential election, the local activity around the Obama campaign represents a terrific long-term opportunity for the Shelby County Democratic Party--if they want it--to welcome in hundreds, if not thousands, of new members. High school students, college students, reformed felons, and other first-time voters are being added to the voter rolls in Memphis because they are inspired by Barack Obama. Clearly a lot of those people may never vote again (especially if Obama loses the election) but we are positioned here to have a real impact on upcoming Gubernatorial and Senate elections, to say nothing of the change we could affect in electing "better" Democrats to local offices!

At the risk of sound sentimental, that is what this election is about: inviting people to use their voices in deciding the civic fate of their communities, their states, and their country. I've registered 17 year-olds to vote for the first time, and I've helped 60 year-old former felons get their rights restored so that they can vote for the first time. You can't tell me, or them, that what we're doing isn't important. To the contrary, nothing could be more important!

My apologies to contraltodelete for all of the "obnoxious" pro-Obama material that is being circulated on a pro-Obama listserv. Certainly we the converted never meant to impose. We're simply trying to build and keep enthusiasm going. At this point, it's all we've got, but I'll be damned if it doesn't count for something.

kerry, to clarify my remark:

It looks as if some of the mail I've gotten was intended for specific individuals and forwarded along the general message boards. No apologies are needed from you; the messages didn't come from you. I just had to "vent" as they say, and to point out that for some who have been in the campaign longer, the volume of messages may be wearing people out.

Had it not been for the emails, I wouldn't have known about the envelope stuffing at HQ tonight and tomorrow night for the Super Sunday registration. I may not be able to get there myself, but I'm alerting others. That kind of message (an event or whatever) I always welcome. In other words a call to action, not just Obama fans talking to each other.

The Swift Boating has started, many states have early voting, there is no time to waste. That's all I meant.

It could be. There's just no proof that's the case.
