Here's a taste:
It almost makes me pine for fire-breathing right-wingers who at least admit what they're really up to: the demonization of single mothers. Cashman, on the other hand, insists that "we're not picking on anybody." This is either stupendously naive or profoundly disingenuous.

Nah, but your praise of thoughts like this makes me know YOU'RE part of this particualr problem too.
There's no such thing as a euphemistic "single mother." You're either unwed, divorced, or widowed, or some combination.
I can think of another euphemism:
"Hair-splitting dick."
as the author of the original post, i'm completely baffled by your criticism, wintermute. there is nothing at all euphemistic about "single mother" - the word "single" refers to people who are not married, for whatever reason. it carries no positive or negative connotations. it's just a descriptive adjective. we don't only talk about single mothers. we also talk about single women, single men, older singles, the "newly single" after breakups, singles bars, people describe themselves as "single" in personal ads.... does all of this bother you??
moreover, the editorial in the commercial appeal to which i was responding used the same term. because i was criticizing that editorial, i used the same term. i may have a political agenda, but the use of the term "single mother" has nothing whatsoever to do with it.
thanks for the link, lwc!
