Stunning news from the Election Commission

My sources have told me that, by a unanimous 5-0 decision, the Shelby County Election Commission approved the petition of Rep. Joe Towns, Jr. (D-Memphis) to run for the Democratic nomination for Congress from the 9th Congressional District.

Holy crap!

Unlike Nikki Tinker, Towns has A) legislative experience, B) a record of public service to the Memphis community and C) an ability to draw votes from the African-American community, which makes him a viable candidate against Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Memphis).

This changes everything, folks, stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, if he can even find Cohen to run against him. I like Steve and voted for him but just can't really find him anywhere substantial.
Good point though.

btw~Don't let my blog name t'row you. I moved back to Memphis from NOLA after Katrina, right when Rita came in actually. New to blogging I haven't seen much of the Memphis scene 'till finding yours. You rock big dogs.

Game over. Game lost.
Sorry about that, Chief.
Next year.

Thanks,
Bruce

I don't like it when politicians have their name on the ballot for two offices. In Joe's case, its the Tn House District 84th and the 9th Congressional. Must be an easy gig.

I completely agree Tom. You need to pick ONE office and go for it. Also LWC are you being serious? Towns ran for this seat two years ago and didnt get no where. So why would this year be any different?

I wish it "changed everything" but Townes got 0 traction in an open race last time.

First, Bruce, welcome to the Bluff City.

Next, gentlemen, I must remind you that Towns did ZERO campaigning two years ago, nada, zilch.

With no opposition for his District 84 seat, he is now free to campaign like hell. Will he? Let's hope so, I think he will.

He OWNS Whitehaven, which is the backbone of the Democratic vote in the 9th District. If he campaigns at all, he will pass Tinker and could scare the hell out of Cohen.

And, a solid Towns campaign destroys any chance of a Tinker victory, which is fine with me. I support Cohen completely, but if Towns won, he would do a hell of a lot better job than that carpetbagger from Alabama.

If he owns Whitehaven then he would have gotten a big chunk without campaigning last time. How much midtown vote would Cohen get without campaigning? Plus, why would he campaign hard against an inucumbent but not in a wide-open primary last time that would have been easier to win?
